Falmouth Art Gallery  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **** / *****

Sarah and Alex’s talk regarding the Gallery ---------------------------------------------------  *** / *****

My visit to the Falmouth Art Gallery was interesting. The Exhibition that I was able to view was that of a response to the 50’s and 60’s.
Falmouth Art Gallery is separated between three rooms for this exhibition. The rooms were as follows; Entry room, Tutors response to the subject, Passage room and rear room, The students response to the subject.

Alex and Sarah were the two members of staff that gave us a somewhat formal discussion about the exhibition in hand. The reason for me to say that this was a `somewhat formal discussion` is because; Alex was full of facts with what was being shown within the exhibition, but almost made it informal due to rambling off too much and going off topic with what he was saying. Alex stated that this exhibition is a “nostalgic view into the past”, along with saying that this was work brought from the old “Tremough” campus which is now known as Penry Campus. Alex saying the old name for the campus really fit into the vibe of the show that was being exhibited.

On reflection to the exhibition I have just witnessed I have chosen three amazing pieces of artwork. These pieces of artwork grabbed my attention, as I feel they had were completely different to the others, but not in a bad way but something that really stands out. These are as follows:

Ann Hoggs - Abstraction from granite,
I do not like two of the three images that this artist has created, but the one I really like is an abstract painting of a tree next to a lake, I am not normally a fan of abstract work but this is very appeasing. I love how sharp and angled all the branches are on the tree and how much she has mimicked them in the reflection. Ann has used very earthy and colours within this piece of work which really makes the work pop out from the other abstract pieces around her.

Work rating: **** / *****

David Andrew - Studies into geometrical obstruction,
I really enjoyed looking at this piece of work as it is not only abstract, but it is very minimalist, it is something that is very satisfying to look at as it creates a very calm type of atmosphere when looking at this. David has used very plain colours this really fits into this minimalistic style as he doesn’t need to use detailed colours and shading to create a piece that clearly stands out from the rest of the work within the gallery.

Work rating: **** / *****

Phil Naylor - low cloud,
Out of all the work filling this Gallery, this was most definitely my favourite one, not due to its size as it is in one of the smallest pieces within the gallery, but just for its simplistic but impactful imagery. What I mean by this is that it leaves it to you, the viewer, to think of what the object is thinking of and what it is going through within the small image, In my case the cloud portrays the darkness over the top of the person this could be depression, anxiety, stress or just a deep sadness. This is something that really opens your eyes to what happens in the world to some people when on their own and the feelings they hide within them. The colours that Phil used were very saturated, it has taken the small amount of colour from the objects in the painting and made them very cold and very emotive this is definitely something that I would want to have in my house just because of its meaning.

This exhibition is on until Saturday the 3rd of November I truly advise you view this as it is as Alex stated ‘’Nostalgic’’.
